York’s Top Bakeries & Coffee Roasters 2025
Our Ultimate Guide to Sweet Treats, Savoury Delights & Proper Coffee
There’s just something about a good bakery. That smell when you walk in. That just-pulled-from-the-oven loaf. And while the rest of the UK might still be catching up thanks to Bake Off and Instagram croissants, York’s been quietly nailing the bakery game for years.
Here’s our guide to the best places in town for fresh bread, banging brownies, or a savoury slice with your morning flat white – no chains, no nonsense, just the good stuff.
Haxby Bakehouse
Phil Clayton and his team are absolute legends – and The Good Food Guide agrees. This is proper, slow-fermented bread made with local flour that tastes like someone actually cared. Their Clifton Moor spot is worth the detour for focaccia sandwiches and a cinnamon bun that’ll make you rethink your lunch plans.
Flori
Flori, now in a lovely new shop on Bishy Road is the kind of bakery that makes people queue happily in the drizzle. Run by Lotte, who trained at Stockholm’s legendary Bageri Petrus, this place brings a Scandinavian-style approach to York’s bakery scene – think cardamom buns, almond croissants, and seasonal specials. Small batch, handmade, and gone fast.
Bluebird Bakery
From market stall to multiple locations, Bluebird’s now a York institution. Their cinnamon buns should come with a warning and their organic sourdoughs are the real deal. The Little Shambles shop is ridiculously cute – just don’t rock up at 3pm and expect anything to be left.
Brew & Brownie Bakeshop
Two doors. Double the trouble. Brew & Brownie is a rite of passage for any York visitor (or local with taste). Think beautiful brunch plates, dreamy cakes, and some of the best baked bits in the city – all made in-house and photogenic as hell.
Cosgriff & Sons
Fishergate’s bread heroes. It started as a lockdown project and now it’s a full-blown sourdough empire. Expect chewy, crusty loaves, proper chocolate chip cookies, and a vibe so welcoming you’ll end up staying for a chat. Their pain au chocolat deserves its own fan club.
Partisan
More than just a café, Partisan is where good coffee meets great cake and local art. Settle in with a slice of lemon, polenta and pistachio or something strudel-y while sipping a coffee. Add Baileys if you’re feeling fancy. We won’t judge.
The Savvy Baker
Born in lockdown, fuelled by brownies, and now one of the city’s sweetest success stories. Savvy is bold, fun, and full of colour – from Insta-worthy drinks to OTT bakes. Cookie dough brownie, anyone? (The answer is yes.)
Heppni Bakeri
Scandi vibes and serious pastry technique – Heppni’s Swinegate shop is a mini Nordic getaway. Everything’s baked with ridiculous attention to detail and the results are stunning. Don’t leave without a Black Forest Pain Suisse. You’ve been warned.
Little Blondie Bakehouse
This Walmgate gem is all colour, sugar, and chaotic joy. Over 50 treats baked daily, boxes curated for indecisive snackers, and almond croissants that regularly sell out. It’s one of those spots you walk into for a coffee and leave with a sugar high and three emergency pastries.
Little Arras
Hiding in plain sight on Goodramgate, Little Arras is as stylish as it is delicious. They only bake what they’d eat themselves, and it shows. Almond croissants, gorgeous slices, and slow-fermented loaves all backed up by top-tier coffee from Square Mile. Minimal interiors, maximum flavour.
Black Wheat Club
By day: brunch, bread, and pastries so good they make cancelling plans feel worth it. By night: one of the best seasonal dinner spots in town. Fossgate’s coolest little secret does sourdough by morning and rustic small plates by candlelight. We’re obsessed.
Bar Hashery
Bootham’s most chilled brunch spot. Great Origin coffee, open bakery treats from Micklegate, and a short-but-sweet selection of bakes and cocktails. Pistachio buns and Bakewell tarts never tasted so good with a flat white (or a dirty chai, if that’s your thing).
Serious About Coffee at Home too? These York Roasters Are Your New Best Friends
Roost Coffee, Malton
Small but mighty, Roost Coffee are the Malton-based roasters that quietly turn out some of the best beans in Yorkshire. Their setup’s unflashy but their roasting game is strong – ethically sourced, always fresh, and roasted with real care just outside the town’s foodie heart. No gimmicks, just banging brews.
Divine Coffee Roasters, York
Tucked away in the suburbs of York, Divine Coffee Roasters are the indie caffeine kings of the north side. They roast everything in-house in small batches, with a strong “support local” vibe and a serious eye for quality. You’ll find their beans in cafés, delis and kitchens all over the city – and once you’ve had a cup, you’ll know why.
York Coffee Emporium
York Coffee Emporium are proper veterans of the city’s caffeine scene. They’ve been roasting in York since 2011, keeping things sustainable, fair trade, and full of character. Whether you like your coffee mellow and nutty or dark and punchy, these folks have a roast (and a reusable tin) with your name on it.
Harmony Coffee, Wetherby
Fresh, light, and laser-focused on balance – Harmony Coffee are Wetherby’s answer to boutique roasting. They roast in micro-batches, blend with care, and aim for that sweet spot between flavour and feel-good. Bonus points for style: their bags look good enough to gift, even if you’re just gifting them to your own kitchen.
