We tried out Black Wheat Club, York’s Newest Bakery & Bistro
Find out everything you need to know about this York bistro's Big Brunch Energy
If you love freshly baked bread, amazing coffee, and a cozy brunch spot that turns into a wine and small plates haven by night, then get ready—Black Wheat Club has recently opened on Fossgate, and we can report its really rather good.
What’s the Buzz?
This isn’t just any new café—it’s the first permanent spot from Marta Obuchowska and Tomek Mlynarski, the couple behind York’s much-loved Krep street food stall (which we love) at Shambles Market. Known for their ridiculously good crêpes and galettes, they have now expanded their talents into this micro-bakery and bistro at 52 Fossgate (yep, the old Bowler and Betty vintage shop).
They are now serving handmade bread, seasonal ingredients, and a menu packed with flavors inspired by Marta and Tomek’s childhoods, all served up in a stylish yet laid-back setting.
What’s on the Menu?
Black Wheat Club is all about comfort food done right—simple dishes with a focus on top-quality ingredients and artisanal baking. Here’s what you can expect:
Freshly Baked Bread – Baked in-house, served with all the good stuff it was so good we took some home
Specialty Coffee – Because a good brunch spot needs great coffee, and we can report the copper we had was fab
Brunch & Small Plates – Think seasonal dishes that change regularly, keeping things fresh.
Natural Wine & Evening Bites – As the sun sets, the vibe shifts to wine and small plates, perfect for a relaxed night out.
Why This Spot is a Big Deal
Fossgate is already York’s foodie paradise, packed with independent gems like Spring Espresso, The Fossgate Social, Ambiente Tapas, and The Blue Barbakan—and Black Wheat Club is about to make it even better.
With their passion for quality, love of simple but amazing food, and a focus on great hospitality, Marta and Tomek are bringing something special to the street. And let’s be real—who doesn’t need another go-to brunch spot with the added bonus of fantastic bread and wine?
