Six North Yorkshire Restaurants in Britain's Top 100
Take a Culinary Adventure with us through Gods own County
As we all know North Yorkshire is a proper culinary hotspot. Well, the news is out: six of our very own restaurants have made it into the UK's top 100! That’s right, six! It's time to get your taste buds ready for a proper Yorkshire feast!
What's the Big Deal?
SquareMeal, the independent restaurant guide, has released its Top 100 list, and it's packed with some of the best grub in the country. They use thousands of reader votes and their own expert critics to decide who makes the cut, and this year, North Yorkshire is killing it. They’ve even called our county a “powerhouse culinary county”.
The Six Stars of North Yorkshire
Here are the restaurants that made it into the top 100 and where you can find them:
10 - Myse, Hovingham:
Location: Main Street, Hovingham
Vibe: Proper northern welcome with mind-bendingly good, gallery-worthy food. They offer an expertly polished experience with true hospitality. They serve a modern British tasting menu drawn from the rich history of North Yorkshire. You can start your meal with drinks by the log burner.
Must-Try: Expect dishes like duck and liver crumpets, and broad bean porridge.
15 - Angel at Hetton:
Location: The Angel Inn, Hetton
Vibe: It looks like a quintessential Yorkshire pub from the outside, but inside it's been filled with a modern interior. Think crisp plaster, living fungus screens, and bonsai trees. Michael Wignall has been collecting Michelin stars for decades. It is known as one of the best gastropubs in the UK.
Must-Try: They have both a la carte and tasting menus with modern and refined dishes.
27 - Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall:
Location: Grantley Hall, Ripon
Vibe: You'll start with drinks and snacks in the plush, pastel-decorated dining room before moving to the main menu. Shaun Rankin focuses on fresh, natural, seasonal ingredients, mostly from his own kitchen garden. The restaurant is located in one of the country’s finest hotels and has won a Michelin star.
Must-Try: The ten-course triumph where you will experience the best Yorkshire has to offer.
28 - Roots York:
Location: Marygate, York
Vibe: This is the second restaurant from chef Tommy Banks, who also runs the Michelin-starred Black Swan at Oldstead. It's a contemporary space in a revamped old pub, serving fine dining. They use seasonal ingredients grown and foraged on the family farm.
Must-Try: Expect dishes that are full of joy and showcase the chef's Yorkshire roots.
31 - Forge at Middleton Lodge:
Location: Middleton Lodge Estate, Middleton Tyas
Vibe: They offer a refined dining experience with a major focus on sustainability. It also won a green star in 2024. Head chef Jake Jones explores Yorkshire's culinary landscape with six- and ten-course tasting menus, using produce from the estate’s own kitchen garden.
Must-Try: Their tasting menus offer an assertive delve into Yorkshire’s culinary landscape.
68 - The Abbey Inn Byland:
Location: Byland, York
Vibe: Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks is also the chef director here. He helped transform a 19th-century inn into a destination restaurant and pub with rooms. The inn blends classic pub charm, expert culinary intuition, and environmentally conscious practices. It is a home-style experience, elevated by inventive techniques.
Must-Try: They use quality local produce from the Oldstead farm, and prepare it using charcoal grilling.
