York Needs You (and Your Elbow Grease)
Fancy helping York look its best this summer? Now’s your chance to get stuck in and give the city centre a bit of love — one bollard at a time.
The team at York BID is calling on locals, workers and anyone with a bit of spare time to grab a brush and join their Rejuvenation Days, giving the city streets a proper tidy up. We’re talking benches, bike racks, bollards, bins — if it sits still long enough, it’s getting a fresh coat.
When’s it happening?
There are three Rejuvenation Days this month, in fact the first two very successful ones were this week. The next one is Thursday 26 June.
It all kicks off with the Street Cleaning Team getting the place prepped — power washing, sticker-peeling, and weed-whipping the whole area before the painting starts.
And don’t worry, you won’t be expected to wrestle broken bollards — the BID is working with City of York Council to tackle the gnarlier jobs that need fixing or replacing.
This isn’t their first clean-up…
Since the project launched in January 2024, over 300 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and helped repaint 1,100+ bits of street furniture across 57 different streets in York. Which, frankly, is impressive — and a big reason the city’s looking as sharp as it does.
