Our pick of the best places in York to get fab fast food thats local. independent and tasty
Here is our 2025 guide to our top fast food spots in York. Whether you’re into burgers, Ramen or Shawarma, York’s indi fast food scene has something to answer your every take out wish.
Our York Fast Food Picks
Cresci
Bringing the tradition of Neapolitan pizza to York, Cresci Pizzeria at 20 Piccadilly has quickly become a favorite since opening in April 2020. It’s highly recommended by locals and its our top 10 best places to eat in our book York Local Knowledge Must-do Top Tens & the vouchers to get them for less.
The Pig and Pastry
The Pig and Pastry is a beloved neighborhood café located at 35 Bishopthorpe Road in York. It’s renowned for its hearty breakfasts, and brunches but its also great for a take away - i’m a really big fan of their breakfast burger.
Middel Feast
Middle Feast is a vibrant Lebanese restaurant and takeaway located at 13 Lendal in York city centre. They are renowned for their shawarma—our favourite is the marinated chicken cooked on a spit and served in khubz bread with fresh salad and sauces.
Bugsy’s
Burgsy’s Burger House is a cozy, independent restaurant nestled at 9 Walmgate in York. It's independent, family-run and does exceptional gourmet burgers. Everything is made from scratch and locally sourced (meat from the Butcher's Block coffee from Yorkshire by Baytown Coffee Company and beer from York's local Rudgate Brewery) They even make their own sauces.
Our favourite is Sloppy Joe Beef Burger with loaded fries.
The Shambles Food Court
The Shambles Food Court is the perfect place to feed your family. There is something for every picky member from hot dogs to crepe and Thai street food. Once picked everyone can sit together in the group benches where you will find shade from the sun or the rain.
Some of our favourites include:
The spicy chicken wrap from Los Moros
Biscoff Krep and Nutella Krep from — you guessed it — it's called Krep
Ham and Cheese toastie from The Dark Horse Espresso Bar Horse box — also the best place to get your coffee
The Thai Sweet Chilly Chicken and rice from Thai Style
Samosas from Nukkad
Spark:York
Spark:York is a community hub situated at 17–21 Piccadilly in York city centre. This innovative space repurposes shipping containers to create an affordable and supportive environment for local entrepreneurs, artists, and social enterprises. Over the last few years it has acted as a fantastic incubator for Indi food and drink places some of which have graduated to bigger premises in York.
Some of our favourites include:
SASA Greek Street Food: Authentic Greek grilled food - we love the Chicken Gyros Loaded Fries - Oregano chips toped with Chicken Gyros, tzatziki, Sasa sauce, crispy onion and parsley.
Kamakiri Ramen: These are the new guys on the block serving Ramen and Japanese-inspired delights - we love the Chicken Gyoza that they serve with spring onions, sesame seeds & gyoza dipping sauce - see our recent article on them here
Vovó Cantina: A Brazilian-inspired grill kitchen - we love the Porquinho Loaded Hotdog sausages on toasted brioche, with smoked bacon and chorizo, crispy onions, and smoked bacon & garlic mayo.
Clucking Oinks
No need to go to KFC when you have Clucking Oinks with its amaizing fried chicken. Founded by Mike and Rachel, it began as a street food stall at Spark:York and has since expanded to a full restaurant on Castlegate. Their commitment to quality has earned them accolades, including the title of Best Fried Chicken in the North & Midlands. Our favourite is a Big Cluck - buttermilk fried chicken served on a brioche bun with pickles, shredded lettuce, Big Cluck sauce, and American cheese.
St. Sampson’s Centre Cafe
Once upon a time (okay, 1154 A.D.), St. Sampson’s was a full-blown medieval church. But then the legends at York Civic Trust stepped in and turned it into something even better: a community hub and café with a real heart.
They offer low-cost food, great coffee, good company, and even volunteering opportunities for people who might struggle to get a foot in the door elsewhere.
What we love - Coffee from £1.20 (yes, really) and a Panini from £2.50!
For more info about the cafe just read our recent article here
Drake’s Fish & Chips
There are a lot of Fish and Chips places in York but our favourite is Drake’s Fish & Chips. This family-run plaice (see what I did there) located at 97 Low Petergate is in the heart of York’s historic centre, just steps from the iconic York Minster (its got a fab sunny park to eat your take out in the sunshine). Our favourite is the breaded wholetail Whitby Scampi & Chips.
