Our 2025 List of the Best Asian Restaurants in York
Our pick of the best of York's local, reasonably priced, independent Asian Restaurants
Are you craving great Asian food in York? Good news, there are loads of fab restaurants that make it easy to avoid the large restaurant chains. Here is my 2025 guide to our favourites. If you are after something less Asian then you can find some other great options in my latest book York Local Knowledge: Must-Do Top Tens & the Vouchers to get them for Less.
Our York Asian Restaurant Picks
Thai Season
Thai Season is located in my favourite places to eat in the sunshine, the Shambles Market. Go there any day if the week to get yourself some reasonably priced Thai Street Food including dishes like Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce Pad Thai and fantastic fried dumplings. They have also recently opened a sit down restaurant on Bishy Road thats got even more dishes.
Our favourite: The Sweet Chilli Chicken
Ippuku Tea House
Ippuku Tea House, situated at 17 Blake Street in York is hands down the best Japanese food in York, it’s also a great place to eat in and has a lovely garden in the back where you can eat your sushi in the sunshine.
The menu features traditional dishes such as donburi, teishoku, and onigiri, and everything is gluten-free. The tea selection is also fab including varieties like matcha lattes and gyokuro tea.
Our favourite: Gyu Don and their Matcha Tea
Phranakhon
Phranakhon, located at 19 Grape Lane in York, offers a mix of Thai flavour with a European tapas-style approach. Its a great place to go with friends for an evening of sharing lots of small plates filled with everything from Phranakhon Chilli Squid, Yam Tua Kung Sod (warm green bean salad with king prawns), to Gaeng Ped Kae (Thai red curry with lamb).
Our favourite: The Super crunchy chicken wings with a sweet and spicy tamarind sauce.
Duck Shack
I lived in hong Kong for 18 years, one of the things I miss most is the food. The good news is York now has Duck Shack. Located at 14 St. Sampson’s Square Duck Shack serves the most authentic Hong Kong-style BBQ I have had outside Hong Kong as well as fantastic Dim Sum.
Our favourite: Char Siu Pork with fried rice and greens
Oshibi Korean BBQ
You will find Oshibi Korean Bistro & BBQ tucked away in a small courtyard just off Fossgate. Located at 9 Franklins Yard, Fossgate, Oshibi offers a fab Korean night out with a menu including traditional dishes like Beef Bulgogi—marinated beef stir-fried with vegetables—and Yang Nyum Chicken, which is deep-fried chicken tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. You can also have an interactive night out where you go full on Korean BBQ, grilling meats and vegetables at your table.
Our favourite: The Yang Nyum Chicken - deep fried chicken in sweet & spicy sauce
Tah Tien
Back in 2020 Tah Tien was my lock down go to treat for a take away but it’s also a great place for a sit down meal in a pandemic free world. Located at 10 North Street in York, Tah Tien is a Thai street food experience that mirrors the food stalls you will find on the streets of Bangkok. The restaurant has a tapas-style menu, packed full of dishes exploding with flavour including Duck Spring Rolls and spicy Massaman Curry with Chicken. The menu is also great for a vegetarian or my gluten-free wife.
Our favourite: Geaw Tord - Deep fried park & prawn dumplings
Chef Lu's
I spent a lot of time in Beijing and Shanghai in my 20’s and I can tell you that real Chinese food is not the stuff you get from your local take away. If the real deal is what you are after just follow all the Chinese students to Chef Lu’s. Located at 40 Huby Court, Walmgate, they offers a great menu and very generous portions of traditional dishes such as hot pot, blood duck pudding, and roasted fish.
Our favourite: The Mixed Hot Pot in Chilly Oil
