Old York Tea Room Unveils a Fresh New Look
A new look tea room with a set of rules for customers
The Old York Tea Room on Goodramgate has undergone a transformation, unveiling an elegant red and gold interior adorned with clocks and framed artwork lining the beamed walls. After temporarily closing at the start of January, owners Tony and Thomas Vickers have now created a tea room with a ‘Cosy, Warm, Gothic, Rose’ theme that they will reveal in the 1st February when they reopen.
In addition to the new look, the tea room has introduced a set of rules for customers to enhance the experience for both patrons and staff with the aim of maintaining the unique atmosphere of the historic building, which dates back to 1316, and ensure a pleasant visit for all.
Her are the new rules….
We do not do gluten free. Our kitchen is a very small and to prepare such food is not safe.
Unfortunately we do not have access for wheelchair. The house was built in 1316 and cannot be altered, if you fancy sweet treats just park outside, wave and we will come to you take your takeaway order, or help you get upstairs.
We no longer accept tables for just drinks. Specially over the lunch period. It’s expensive to keep a period house open like this and we want to remain open.
We now operate one queue for take away and sit in and you must be patient otherwise we are not for you, do not push past others! Again the house is what it is and demands respect.
We are a laptop free zone. There is a very good library for that.
You may ask for tap water but not as your only drink. There is no legal requirement for us to do so. And we need to fund the operations of this beautiful building. We do understand some just like water. We do sell bottled water and if you purchase this you are contributing to keeping the house funded. Exceptions can be made if necessary.
The updated menu features freshly baked cakes, scones, brownies, and a selection of loose teas and coffees. New additions include two types of hot pancakes and ‘The Afternoon Experience for Two,’ offering finger sandwiches, homemade scones with jam and clotted cream, a selection of cakes, and a choice of tea, priced at £43.99.
The Old York Tea Room is set to reopen on 1 February, so go and visit but remember there rules!
